Did You Know?

Not all water looks unsafe before it harms you. Here are five signs — some obvious, some invisible — that your drinking water may need a closer look.

When Water Isn't What It Appears

Contaminated water doesn't always announce itself. Some of the most dangerous waterborne contaminants are invisible, tasteless, and odourless. Others have warning signs that are easy to miss. Here are five indicators that your water deserves scrutiny.

1. A Chlorine or Chemical Smell

Some chlorine in treated water is normal. But a strong, persistent chemical smell indicates over-chlorination or contamination from an industrial source. If the smell persists after letting water sit 30 minutes in an open container, the issue is something other than chlorine.

2. Cloudiness or Unusual Colour

Yellow or brown tint suggests iron or manganese from corroded pipes. Blue-green tint indicates copper from plumbing. Milky white cloudiness may be air bubbles (harmless) or suspended particles (not harmless).

3. White Scale Buildup

White crusty deposits on your kettle or taps indicate hard water with high calcium and magnesium. Very high TDS can indicate the presence of other dissolved contaminants.

4. Recurring Gastrointestinal Illness

If multiple family members experience repeated stomach upset without an obvious food cause, the water supply should be investigated. Waterborne pathogens like E. coli and Giardia cause exactly these symptoms.

5. A Broken Seal on Packaged Water

If you receive bottles with cracked caps or loose seals — stop drinking from that bottle. A compromised seal means the water's sterility cannot be guaranteed. Always check the tamper-proof ring before opening.
